Establish a receptive customer list
If you are trying to develop a long-term relationship with your customers sending emails to large, unsuspecting groups is not the route you want to take. That type of strategy does not produce high success rates and the majority of those that do respond will not become repeat customers. To turn an introduction in to a lasting relationship you must ask for permission before sending additional information. Those giving permission are telling you that they want to know more about you and what you have to say.
Provide interesting and useful information
You now have a list of people who are receptive to being contacted by you on a regular basis. Do not take this responsibility lightly. This is not the time to start inundating them with vast amounts of purely self-serving information. Take this opportunity to send them information that they will find useful and beneficial. They will pay you back by becoming a faithful member of your audience and by telling others about the benefits of you and your organization.
Create a more relevant customer experience
To increase the responsiveness of your audience don’t treat them like they are all the same. Use what you know to create a unique customer experience for each of them. This can be as simple as including key pieces of customer information within your marketing piece giving it a more personal feel or as complex as having a website where the images and content are unique to the each visitor. Whatever you decide to do, creating a more relevant experience for your customers will go a long way to increase the effectiveness of your marketing efforts.
Analyze, analyze, analyze!
Every time you interact with a current or potential client it is an opportunity to learn more about them. Use how they respond, or don’t respond, to your campaigns to refine your messaging. This will make future efforts more successful. The better you know your customers the more accurately you will be able to diagnose their problems and offer them the appropriate product or service as a solution.
By following these simple steps you will start noticing the increased effectiveness of your efforts. The rewards for these changes will not be visible overnight, but in the long-term it will produce a larger, happier, more loyal and engaged customer base.
